The announcement from Ian Foulds says unregistered posters will not be able to post after 6th September, however, they are still popping up so what happened there then? Is it to happen on 6th September 2009?

What d'ya reckon Jacob?!;)

I agree.
But the spammers are all registering aren't they? I rather thought that was the problem.

We will just have to go somewhere else then, where they want us.
There's a lot of us you know. You will miss us when we are gone!

We are a persecuted minority - and it must be against anti-discrimination laws.

I was trying to be helpful giving my expert advice on linseed oil, and I was threatened on here by a little drip name of Wayne Dwopp.

We unregistered mustn't go away but fight for fair and proper treatment.

There's more of us than them! Not a minority at all.
United we stand etc

You are obviously a dynamic group...and I admire that. But what harm would it do if you did register with your name(s). Why are you so opposed to it? I don't understand.

Sorry about the delay. With the festival over the weekend I got sidetracked onto more interesting stuff.

I have now turned off unregistered postings so lets see how we go.

If this doesn't stop it, I know some people have mentioned that the spammers are registered users, we can moderate new users for a few postings to try and ensure that they are legitimate.

Ian.

Ian.Well it works - I was just trying to post something slightly silly, but anonymous - and the door was slammed in my face and I had to log in:eek: Good idea IMHO

Hi Ian

Let's see how it works. I think you are right that there was in fact very little abuse of the unregistered option and indeed no serious abuse of the registered option either. Most of the so called 'spammers' used it mainly to get extra links to their web sites by placing alink on their message board profile.

Well if you look at the bottom of the board we have had 94 members but only 37 active. The balance of 57 were nearly all spammers. The extra links included child porn amongst other things, mostly less unpleasant. And there's no knowing how many virus's have been propagated behind the scenes.
You have a new one welcomed aboard this morning I see!
They became less of a problem thanks to the eagle eyed moderators who keep banning them.
You have had, and still have, a serious spam problem.

cheers
Jacob
PS not one, but two this morning. That was a quick ban, now you see it, now you don't!
PPS here is a reminder , for those who don't understand what the fuss is about! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forum_spam
Quoting from the wiki article:
Spam prevention and deletions measurably increase the workload of forum administrators and moderators. The amount of time and resources spent keeping a forum spam free contributes significantly to labour cost, and the skill required in the running of a public forum. Marginally profitable or smaller forums may be permanently closed by administrators. Forums that do not require registration are becoming rare.

Well done, Ian! Some 'unregistered' have sent in very good messages. I have often replied to them, but I always I found it disconcerting replying to a nobody!

I see that llh11456 (http://www.wirksworth.net/forum/member.php?find=lastposter&f=6) has been welcomed aboard today and is being allowed to post his games nonsense!

Well we are getting there. Closing the unregistered loophole is a step. Monitoring posts is not necessarily much use as the spam gets dropped in the profile etc as described here wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forum_spam) which everybody should read if they have any doubts

The next step is to regulate new membership with an approval process. Really, it will be lot less bother in the long run, not having to monitor posts and to ban spammers every day or so.
And it will stop me from burbling on about it!

cheers
Jacob

More anti spam stuff here http://sumbit.com/phpbb_spam.htm is about phpbb but most also applies to this board.

Extract:
Some webmasters have the attitude of "ignore the problem and it'll go away". This is the silliest concept I have heard.. There are three problems with this thought process:

1. Many of these spammers are organized and actually share / trade their lists of spammable boards, if yours is an easy target, it can only get worse once they share their lists with other spammers.. Overtime they will completely inundate the majority of your memberlist.
2. By ignoring the problem you are making it worse for everyone else by simply making it "easy for them"..
3. If you are concerned about SEO (especially your page rank), these memberlist spammers and spam posters are literally draining your websites Google PR.

I see that the management have welcomed aboard 4 (?) spammers in the last 24 hours, and we can start the day with a blast of porn this morning!

Time to do something about it, as I have been saying for 7 months. It will only get worse. Read the quotes above in this thread.

Doing nothing is not just stupid, it's also irresponsible.

Hi Jacob,
I've been sitting here doing my best to remove the posts this morning. Unwanted and unsuitable posts have been coming in thick and fast. But I can't sit here all day - other things to do! So for the moment, please be patient.
Cheers,
Stella

Hi Stella
Sorry you are having to deal with it - it's not your fault it's the management.

Spam is completely unnecessary and easy to avoid, if only the management would pull it's finger out and switch on an appropriate registration process. They shouldn't just leave it to you to clean up very day. They are just being lazy and irresponsible. I'm amazed - it's not as if they are teenage volunteers! This is why I dipped out as a moderator.

May be we should look at setting up an alternative board. This issue has gone on far too long IMHO.

cheers
Jacob
BTW the porn they allow on this site appears in other places too - the front of the wirksworth.net site and on all RSS feeders for example. Not a good advert for Wirksworth!

You're going to busy, Jacob, setting up a new Board for wirksworth.net as well as organising a fortnightly newspaper / listings sheet for the town!

I know I know:D
I subscribe to quite a few newsgroups/message boards like this one. I have a quick look at 3 or 4 every morning over breakfast. This morning's sudden blast of porn nearly made me drop my toast! Too early for me!
You don't get this sort of thing on any of the other groups at all. They are all properly run.
It would take up far LESS time for all involved if this one was too.
The only un-moderated groups I look at are google groups. These are often heavily spammed, but you can't look at the contents without clicking first. Toast stays safe!
Google groups are highly deprecated by the news group fraternity for allowing spam.

cheers
Jacob
PS I should add, that of all the many sites I look at regularly, this wirksworth.net board is the very worst for spam. Except for google groups such as this http://groups.google.com/group/uk.food+drink.misc/topics
where you don't see the spam unless you click the links, and the other exception is the occasional message board which has been long abandoned and taken over entirely by spam.

Hi Ragapuzz
the web page is under review..etc
Glad to hear it! 6 months, but better late than never.
The solution is to have a membership registration approval process in place. Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to put in place.
So that'll be done today I presume :D:D

cheers
Jacob
PS I note that the latest new member welcomed, jkkjkjjfhyaasass (http://www.wirksworth.net/forum/member.php?u=133) although banned fairly promptly, still has membership details up, including porn site links.

Unfortunately I am not the web site designer, I am a very new and not really trained moderater, I am more than happy to have someone to show/train, me if this will overcome your worrys. Anyone can throw criticism and sit back to see what happns.

As in your last coments today, nobodys wants to see porn/spam, but we are trying our best!!

Not your fault either ragapuzz! It's down to 'admin" to do something.

I see someone has removed the RSS link to the wirksworth.net site. This means the spam doesn't get seen there - but it doesn't do anything about it here.
The RSS link here could be disabled as at the moment wirksworth.net is broadcasting spam and porn to everybody in the world who is viewing via an RSS reader. It doesn't get deleted there, so it can hang round for ever, with wirksworth.net as the distributor.
Wirksworth.net is really doing the spammers and pornographers a big favour.
I'll just have to keep repeating this until Alastair, Ian, Mark and co. take some notice. I know it's not their intention to be porn distributors, but I can't understand why they aren't doing anything about it, instead just leaving it to Stella and ragapuzz to tidy up.
