View Full Version : How about a film quiz?

James Ogilvy
26-07-09, 11:56 AM
I think we had one some years back. But how about a new one and what form should it take?

How about themes? I'll start one off with a Hitchcock theme.

Q1. What was symbolic about the character of Hitchcock and how did it represent itself in all of his films?

(Is that two questions? Sorry. But if you know the answer you'll understand why.) :)

Stella
26-07-09, 12:51 PM
Get your facts right, James! NOT ALL OF HIS FILMS - 39 OUT OF A TOTAL OF 52.

James Ogilvy
26-07-09, 12:53 PM
OK, Ms Clever Clogs....so, what's the answer?

Stella
28-07-09, 09:01 PM
He may have been slightly vain because he liked to make a cameo appearance in them.

Wayne Dwopp
29-07-09, 09:50 AM
Who played the husband in Dial M for Murder?

Stella
31-07-09, 07:00 PM
Ray Milland.

Which film star was the part of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz originally intended for?

James Ogilvy
04-08-09, 05:21 PM
I thought we were doing a Hitchcock theme!!!

Anyway, the answer is Elizabeth Taylor.

Stella
04-08-09, 08:26 PM
James, you were right about the Hitchcock theme...sorry about that.

But you were wrong with your answer. It was not Elizabeth Taylor, but Shirley Temple.

Okay, another Hitchcock question.. Who was the woman actor starring with James Stewart in Rear Window?

Erica Boulton
07-08-09, 08:05 AM
That's an easy one....Grace Kelly.

[Interesting that Shirley Temple might have played Dorothy. Would she have tapped-danced her way along the Yellow Brick Road? What a relief Judy Garland got the part!!]

Another Hitchcock question. Erm, I'll have to come back on this one.

From which film was this shot taken?

James Ogilvy
15-08-09, 09:10 AM
What shot? I can't see anything!

Erica Boulton
16-08-09, 11:15 AM
Sorry about that. Here it is again... If it doesn't appear, then I can tell you it is of a woman taking a shower. So what's the film?

Wayne Dwopp
22-08-09, 04:14 PM
My mum told me and Tia that it was the scariest film she had ever seen. It was called Psycho.

Have I got to ask a question now?

Erica Boulton
29-08-09, 07:30 PM
Yes, Wayne. It needn't be a Hitchcock film.

Wayne Dwopp
30-08-09, 04:57 PM
Still on Hitchcock films....

The first time the sound of a flushing toilet was heard was in a Hitchock film. What was the name of the film?

James Ogilvy
31-08-09, 08:25 AM
Ha ha!! The answer again is....Psycho.

Q. What was Bob Hoskin's trade in Super Mario Bros?

Writer
02-09-09, 08:15 PM
I've not seen the film, but I would imagine he would play the part of a boxing trainer. Am I right?

James Ogilvy
03-09-09, 01:56 PM
No, you are not right. I'll give you a clue... everyone requires one at some point in their lives and sometimes they are hard to find.

Erica Boulton
04-09-09, 01:25 PM
This could be anything...an electrician, joiner, plumber, NHS dentist. Can you give us another clue, please?

James Ogilvy
07-09-09, 09:01 PM
Erica, you actually answered the question!!! His trade was that of a plumber.

So, the next question is yours!

In which city did Nicolas Cage's film characters crash a plane, lose his fiancee in a poker game, and drink himself to death?

I think this is Las Vegas, because I like gambling and remember this scene in Honeymoon in Las Vegas.

That's one more than one question, Hans. I don't know the answers to them all, but the film was called Lock, Stock and Two Barrels. I guess the game was poker, but I may be wrong.

Sharon Stone appeared in a movie wearing outfits designed to match Kim Novak's from Vertigo. What was the title of the movie?

Badges? Who said we need badges" was said by Humphrey Bogart in the film, Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

The jin joint was Rick's Bar in Casabalanca. Rick was again played by Humphrey Bogart.

Apparently, the "badge" line was spoofed up in Blazing Saddles.

“Money won is twice as sweet as money earned” was said by Fast Eddie Felson in The Colour of Money. There were some great lines in this movie.

I liked this film, Stella - it was based on the story of the amazing country singer Loretta Lynn and she came from Butcher Hollow in Kentucky.

I've just been given a DVD starring Bette Midler - made in 1990 (it says here) about "a brassy barmaid who falls pregnant after a brief fling with Dr Stephen Dallis... and refuses to marry him or anyone else...and brings up her daughter alone" Who is she and what's the name of t5he film?

James Ogilvy

Kentucky.

I think you will find this is incorrect, Ms Gill. Sorry about that. The state was actually Tennessee. But back to your question....!

MsGill
04-11-10, 11:16 PM
I think you'll find you are wrong, James. She moved to Tennessee but came from Butcher Hollow in Kentucky.

She sang -

Well, I was born a coal miner's daughter
In a cabin on a hill in Butcher Holler

-and Butcher Hollow's in Kentucky.

Now you've accepted I'm right, My question is:

Surely, you can't be serious.
Fans of Leslie Nielsen will most certainly be repeating that classic bit of Airplane! dialogue today (as well as its rejoinder:

"I am serious. And don't call me Shirley.").

Nielsen, a journeyman actor who later found fame with comedy roles in Airplane! and The Naked Gun series, died late Sunday afternoon of complications from pneumonia, E! News has confirmed. He was 84.
"We are saddened by the passing of beloved actor Leslie Nielsen, probably best remembered as Lt. Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun series of pictures, but who enjoyed a more than 60 year career in motion pictures and television," a rep for Nielsen's family tells E! News.

The Birds

The Misfits - a film made in 1961 starred Marilyn Monroe, Montgomery Clift and Clark Gable. Who wrote the script?

BarryF
15-02-11, 05:48 PM
"The making of The Misfits was difficult, not the least of which were the 108 degree heat of the northern Nevada desert and the breakdown of Monroe's marriage to writer Arthur Miller.
Director Huston gambled and drank, and occasionally fell asleep on the set. The production company had to cover some of his gambling losses. Miller wrote new pages throughout the shoot, revising the script as the concepts of the film developed.
Monroe was sinking further into alcohol and prescription drugs. Huston shut down production in August 1960 to send Monroe to a hospital for detox. Monroe was nearly always late to the set, sometimes not showing up at all. Monroe's confidant and masseur, Ralph Roberts, was cast as an ambulance attendant in the film's rodeo scene."
