Film Show
This Saturday June 6th at 7.30 Middleton by Wirksworth, Village Hall Following the success of "Bombs at Teatime" the Middleton Environment Group is showing another of the highly acclaimed BFI/ICO archive compilations: Housewives' Choice Not so long ago housewives had a number of very good reasons to be desperate. Not only did they have to look after their families in an age of depression, war and austerity, but they did so without the consumer durables that we now consider essential. With humour frequently in its sights, Housewives' Choice is a programme of films from the BFI National Archive that explores the lives of British housewives from the 1920s to the 1950s. The programme includes documentaries, cinemagazines, propaganda films and adverts. It also features films by two of the women who helped to shape the British documentary movement of the 1930s and 40s – Ruby Grierson (1904-40) and Kay Mander (1915-). Further film details here http://www.independentcinemaoffice.o...iveschoice.htm We will also have a comedy short film, and refreshments will be available. We will be using the Wirksworth Film Society equipment and Middleton Village Hall is probably the best available venue for films in this area, in terms of size, acoustics and facilities. All welcome and please tell you friends! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It was great. A good turnout from the village plus visitors from as far afield as Tansley, Youlgreave and Grindleford!! Started with a Chaplin short then tea followed by the main feature, a compilation of British Transport films, wartime information and 1930s tips for housewives. Fascinating. Oh, the difficulty of finding the right pyjamas for hubby!! Must have another shopping trip next week! Plenty to laugh at, but also horrendous to see how women, for years after the war, were bringing up families in houses with no inside toilets or bathrooms, doing all the family washing in a cold-water kitchen sink.
Dont know how much in total but we must have raised a good £150 for Middleton Environment Group. |
