Default NOW minutes

I posted this as an email in response to today's NOW mailing. I've always felt that there is a critical mass size for a forum like this and it will never take off until there are sufficient numbers using it and making it necessary for others to join in.

From the minutes: It was regretted that currently wirksworth.net is under-used and groups felt it was difficult to log into. A calendar to which all groups could easily promote their events was paramount.

May I suggest that people make more of an effort to use the Wirksworth net forum?
It's not that difficult to log in - if you have a problem you could let me know and I could post up instructions on the forum itself.
It's not brilliant as it is and the hands-off management idea was never a good one - but it could be excellent if only people would use it, and in using it they could make demands on how to improve it.
Separate from the site itself the forum is potentially a very powerful and useful means of communication with huge scope for improvement and adaptation to suit differing needs, but is dead in the water if nobody uses it.

cheers
Jacob

Well that was a waste of time wasn't it!
Barry and I have both emailed round the NOW group to suggest that they use this site.
Zero response.
What do they really want?
They may come up with alternative site and forum designs but they won't be fundamentally different from this one.
If that is what they think it could take years for them only to discover that they might as well have started here.

I guess the answer is somebody else to do the work. Some sort of roving reporter - but this would be a full time job even in Wirksworth.

Meanwhile the Wirksworth Communications Black Hole stays dark and silent!

Default Hello

G'dafternoon Jacob,

I'm newly moved to Wirksworth so thought I'd join this here (quiet?) forum and say hello.
Signing up was easy, but various messages have threatend not to publish my first comment for up to 24 hours. I shall see in a moment

Qwibble

EDIT: Ah the post has appeared immediately. The day delay has expired, not transpired.

Hello qwibble welcome aboard.
It's a bit quiet in here as a rule but don't let that put you off; the more the merrier!

"It was regretted that currently wirksworth.net is under-used ..."

On behalf of NOW, can I please explain...

This was referring to wirksworth.net and NOT the forum. We are very aware of the difficulties that the existing workers have keeping the web-site in order, but at the same time we believe that Wirksworth deserves a web-site that reflects the liveliness of this amazing town. I'm sure you would agree on that, Jacob. How it is to be achieved without funding is a different story!!!

Incidentally, you keep on referring to the NOW Minutes. Don't you mean the NOW newsletter?

(Enjoy DaleDiva tonight on Channel 5!! And vote for them.)

My point is that the forum is under-used and could actually supply most of the needs indicated i.e. be more useful than the site itself

I don't know if "deserves" come into it if people (present company excepted!) don't make use of what they already have i.e. this forum.

Dear everyone,

What comes through loud and clear in this thread is that Wirksworth isn't particularly well provided for in terms of communication channels. The problem with 'critical mass' on a community web forum is that takeup on a successful site is usually fairly low - and it is usually only the 'usual suspects' who get to know about stuff by this medium.

What Wirksworth now has is a commercial radio service. Commercial radio services are mass - media operations by definition - only in this case on a small scale, which gives us the opportunity to focus on and feature local events, organisations etc. more so perhaps than you might normally expect.

We have ample opportunities for local charitable and not - for - profit, community organisations to promote, appeal, make aware etc. FOR FREE and to reach a growing radio audience right here in Wirksworth and the Ecclesbourne Valley.

One of the reasons we came here is because we realised that as well as no local commercial radio service you had no truly local newspaper and no daily source of local news and no regular source of regular community features. (Apart from The Bridge, which is awesome!) When we were out promoting the launch we found it really difficult to reach people. We leafleted, did the bridge thing and I spoke to as many people as were prepared to speak to me but I kept wishing for a radio station that I could use to tell everyone we were on the way!

Please send all stuff to info@ashbourneradio.co.uk and better still, have a look at my last post (cue bugle) on the radio thread. That details the different things we can provide, for you, for free. Radio works in particular ways it's wonders to perform; so have a look and see which bits you could usefully use for your own purposes!

Of course it only works like this if community organisations and individuals work it, start being a bit proactive and make it work for them and it requires a bit of a change of mindset. But we're here, we're here for you, and the more you send us the more we'll feature. Please regard this as an open invitation. I'd also be happy to speak to community groups about this if I'm free. Have a listen and think how useful this could be with more Wirksworth community stuff on it.

Steve Jenner (96.7 and 101.8 Ashbourne Radio)

Brave of you to venture into the Wirksworth Communications black hole - be careful you may disappear without trace.

start being a bit proactive and make it work for them and it requires a bit of a change of mindset

Absolutely.
