Restoring and opening the railway

The 14 kilometres of railway between Duffield and Wirksworth are being restored and re-opened by volunteers. At the moment, two phases of this work are complete, with trains operating at weekends on a kilometre of line between Wirksworth and Ravenstor, for the National Stone Centre.

The next phase of the re-opening will take in another four kilometres, this time southwards to the first intermediate station at Idridgehay, where the platform has been refurbished ready for track and drainage work scheduled for summer 2006.

Once these phases are done, the work will move further south and it is proposed to gradually restore and re-open the line to Duffield, where there will be an interchange station with the main line. The railway is entirely operated by volunteers who are also doing much of the restoration work. If you are interested in joining as a volunteer, we will be happy to meet you whatever your skills. Please call in at the station on any day.

Wirksworth Station is along Coldwell Street, a very short distance from Market Square.
