Home Front remembered 1945 - 2005

What was life like in Britain during the Second World War?

Wirksworth Homefront project set out to record memories of local residents who could answer that question from personal experience.

The project used the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War to collect reminiscences from current residents of Wirksworth about life on the Home Front during the war. This included memories of the town during the war and also material about other parts of the UK as some present residents have moved to Wirksworth during the last 60 years.

The full archive will be accessible at the Wirksworth Heritage Centre and a selection of the material has been made into a DVD which can be purchased.

The project received a grant from the Big Lottery Fund but the majority of the work was undertaken by a team of volunteers who received training in video making and interview techniques.

Professional input also came from project coordinator Christine Thornhill,  history consultant Katya Coupland from Field of Vision and Mark Pollak of Clifton Media based in Wirksworth.
