BAG-FREE WIRKSWORTH CAMPAIGN

Four years ago, Sustainable Wirksworth ran a campaign to reduce plastic bag use in the town, and launched the 'Wirksworth Bag'. This had quite an impact, but plastic bag usage has crept back up again, with over 10,000 bags a week now being used. Transition Wirksworth, (specifically the ‘Waste Group’, which is concerned with recycling, waste reduction and the re-use of resources) has embarked on an initiative to make Wirksworth one of the growing number of plastic bag-free towns, that is, to minimise the use of single-use bags, and to eliminate the use of non-degradable ones. The first step in achieving this was to gather information about bag use in the town, and we are now following this up with an awareness-raising campaign. We have purchased a new batch of the Wirksworth branded cotton bags, and will be distributing these to businesses in the town along with posters encouraging people to stop using ‘disposable’ bags. Shoppers will therefore have something they can purchase if they don’t have their own bag, and the bags themselves will help to promote the message.
