So not as useful as the other stuff in here but I know I'm not the only astronomer in Wirksworth and the surrounding area!

Carte du Ciel is an electronic start chart which will do pretty much all you need a starchart package to do. Even if you don't have a serious interest in astronomy its a neat tool for working out what the bright star you say while walking the dog was.

Only available of windows at the moment:

For those of you using Mac OSX or Linux / Unix X (even Windows with Cygwin) will do the same job just as well as well as some scientifically useful image analysis: www.clearskyinstitute.com/xephem/index.html

The downside is that it is only downloadable as source but if you like playing with Linux that won't be a problem, I'm not sure about OSX!. In fact it comes as part of several distributions so may well be on your system already.
