Wirksworth is a hidden gem in the Derbyshire Dales and a town with a strong community ethic. Fairtrade has always been considered important to the town and its promotion through the different groups, organisations, shopkeepers and businesses has grown in recent years.
Inspired by the co-operative of Traid Links, known widely for their promoting fairly traded and ethical products and having a presence in the town for the last 22 years, the local council was soon to follow suit declaring themselves a Fairtrade council in June 2006
In recognition of this and the ongoing work of Christian Aid to promote Trade Justice the town supported by the council the Town formed The Wirksworth Fairtrade Group.
This group has recently reignited the mission to get Wirksworth accredited as a Fairtrade Town. Members of the group are now working hard to create a programme of events between now and Fairtrade fortnight, 2008 with a view to applying for accreditation next year.
The group is open to anyone with an interest in Fairtrade, Trade Justice and supporting trade in their community. We would welcome additional members. For further information on the group or Fairtrade issues please call into Traid Links or come along to a meeting, the date of which is on the message board.
