Cromford is stutated in the Derwent Valley close to an ancient crossing point on the river, a mile and a half north of Wirksworth.

The village is world famous as the location of Richard Arkwright's first factory where he introduced the Water Frame which could spin 128 cotton threads at a time. Arkwright was attracted to Cromford for his factory as it had a good source of water power.

Today the village is popular with tourists as Arkwright's Mill is open to the public and the towpath of the nearby Cronmford canal offers an ideal walking route along the Derwent Valley.

Many visitors also appreciate the unique charatcter of Cromford's own bookshop - Scarthin Books.
