Welcome to Wirksworth


Wirksworth is a small town at the head of the Ecclesbourne Valley in the beautiful English county of Derbyshire. Situated about 13 miles North of Derby and 4 miles from Matlock, Wirksworth offers both beautiful countryside and a fascinating local history.

The area is rich in historical interest. It is known to have been settled by the Romans who came to mine for lead, but the Wirksworth Heritage Centre also tells the story of prehistoric inhabitants as well as the more recent history of lead mining and quarrying.

The local countryside offers wonderful opportunities for walking and cycling. Nearby attractions include Carsington Water for water sports, cycling and walking. The High Peak Trail is only a mile away and offers 15 miles of off road cycling and walking on the track bed of the historic Cromford and High Peak Railway.

Local attractions

Wirksworth can offer you the National Stone Centre, two preserved railways (www.e-v-r.com & www.steeplegrange.co.uk), watersports at Carsington Water and some marvellous countryside including for gentle stroll or cycle ride and for the more adventurous, two long distance trails pass close to the town.

Wirksworth Festival

Wirksworth Festival Held every year in September, the Wirksworth Festival has gained a reputation for the quality and variety of artists taking part. The three week\'s of events include performances from national and international performers and exhibitions from leading visual artists.

Copies of the town guide can be obtained at Tourist Information centres, Wirksworth Library and at the Heritage Centre.

Heritage Centre

Wirksworth Heritage Centre is open for the summer season from Good Friday.The Centre offers the casual visitor or serious researcher an understanding of the life of this small town throughout history. Entrance is from the Market Place in the centre of Wirksworth.

Well Dressing and Carnival

Wirksworth's traditional well dressing festival takes place at the end of May every year.May.
The town usually produces 10 traditional Well Dressings.
